Goodbye January

31 Jan

I can’t believe January is over. It has been a busy month and the weather has been crazy! It’s good to be back with perfect vision! The sun and lights are bright, but I can read and see everything!

Today we spent the morning reading more Jan Brett books. Two of our favorites The Mitten and The Hat. Ask your child to retell the stories. Can they name the characters, setting, problem, and solution. Use the props. We made Venn diagrams and then a brochure.

What is symmetry? What are Miras? The students enjoyed making pictures of shapes and designs that were symmetrical. This will lead into a great discussion of shadows and groundhogs tomorrow!!

I would sum up our week with one word SNOW. While we had a new zookeeper of the week, we celebrated last week’s as well! We split our time today in the special chair between two students! Brady was the first blogger.
He wrote: Rit now we are riting in my jrnel. My mom and dad are comejng in. (Right now we are writing in my journal. My mom and dad are coming in)

Brady’s mom and dad came in this morning! We played our game and Brady won in a tiebreaker question! The students enjoyed listening to a fossil book and making their own fossils. I hope they all got home in their bookbags!

We will celebrate Elizabeth’s time next week due to the early release!!

I am glad everyone got to leave early and get home to be with their family! Stay warm!!!

We enjoyed our week on FRACTIONS! Your child can find, label, and recognize fractions!! We made a fraction book, designed a picture with only fractions, and played “name that fraction” with marsh mellows. Sorry students we couldn’t eat them!!

All assessments are complete and most were sent home today! DRA scores and a math overview will be sent home in your child’s report cards!

I will return to blogging on Thursday as the eye DR says no typing or reading up close for 2-3 days!

Sound Jeopardy and Mystery Reader

16 Jan

jeopardy2

We are wrapping up our study on sound. The kids are bringing home their journals tonight to study. We played Jeopardy today to review pitch, volume, the ear, and sound waves. In round one, the girls won 4000 to 3500. The boys want a rematch tomorrow!! Look at the many foldables to review key vocabulary words.

We had a wonderful “goat” as our mystery reader. Thanks to Mrs. Behringer for some cute stories on food! It made us all hungry for lunch!

Rainy Tuesday makes for fun Magic E

15 Jan

We spent this rainy Tuesday singing and dancing…Magic E invaded our classroom. Here is the song the kids love to sing!

Next, we decided on what kind of “e” we wanted to be! Sneaky, Sparkly, or Magic E…The puppets were a great way to show their love for the magic e!!!

Which "e" is your child?

Which “e” is your child?

We had a march to the tune of “Magic e.” We will continue to work on reading and spelling words with magic e. The puppets will come home later this week!!

Musical Friday

12 Jan

With our study on sound almost over, today was the best day for the students!! They got to display their musical instruments within their own band. They had band names and picked their own songs!! What great performances! I hope you all got a video of your child!

Guest Blogger Carleigh

12 Jan

Wow, what a fun week with Carleigh! She came in every morning ready to share things.

She wrote: This week I was zookeeper of the week. My mom is coming in today. I brought in a think mat item yesterday. (Yes, she wrote this all on her own)

Sound and Geometry

9 Jan

The Zoo room is having tons of fun! As we study our unit on sound, students are learning about vibration and pitch. Ask them to tell you about each of the stations? What happens to sound when things vibrate quickly? What are examples of high pitch things?

We have hit the ground rolling in Geometry! We are talking about shapes! Can you tell the number of sides, vertices, and right angles? Our play dough and toothpick activity was loads of fun! We will soon go into discussing 3D shapes!!

Thanks to the PTA, we got to take a tour of our school and all the scences and characters in the book!! It gave us a chance to make predictions about the story!

Happy New Year!!

2 Jan

I can’t believe 2012 is over!! Today was fun to listen to what Santa brought, who went where, and the fun things they did during their winter break. We watched a short clip about the fun celebrations that occurred across the world! They even got to see the ball drop in New York!!
Being a new year, we came up with goals/resolutions. What did your child say? We made books too! Out with the old, in with the new…
